Mississippi Needs a State Poem!

a audiencG overnor

So, some super exciting news has reached my ear from one of fellow Mississippi authors, poet, Patricia Neely-Dorsey. She has been named the official Goodwill Ambassador for the State of Mississippi! I’m so happy for her!

KNOW YE, that the Governor of the State of Mississippi in the name and by the authority of the people of said state as vested in him by the Constitution and Laws of the State of Mississippi reposing special recognition for distinguished accomplishments, does hereby recognize: Patricia Neely-Dorsey Mississippi Author and Poet as a GOODWILL AMBASSADOR for the State of Mississippi in appreciation for the poems Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia-A Life in Poems” that she describes as a “celebration of the south and things southern” and “My Magnolia Memories and Musings- In Poems ” in which her writings continue her celebration of the south and promote a positive Mississippi

What did Patricia have to say? She’s over the moon excited as you can see:

“Both are a recognition of my ongoing efforts to always promote a positive Mississippi. I feel highly honored to have received this recognition for something that I am so passionate about, “Always, Always Celebrating the South and Promoting a Positive Mississippi.” I was delighted when the Governor said during our conversation that I would be a wonderful  “Poetic Ambassador ” for Mississippi! I loved the sound of that!”

But, Patricia needs your help!

“My poem is up for consideration to be declared as our state poem. I want to use my poem “Meet My Mississippi” to help to teach the children of our state (and people of all ages) some important things about Mississippi in a way that can be easily remembered/recalled. The state song, the state motto, the state tree the state bird and the state capitol are all included in the poem, along with other famous landmarks and people of Mississippi. Maybe you could ask/encourage the representative in your area to vote to adopt it.”

Here’s the Poem:

Faulkner’s Sanctuary
Eudora’s home state
Elvis’ birthplace
The bulk of the Trace;
Sprawling beaches
Along the Gulf Coast shore
One blues man’s crossroads
And inspiration for more;
An abundance of history
Tradition and folklore
Warm front porch welcomes
With a wide open door;
A ride down the mighty river
On the American Queen
And some of the most
Beautiful countryside
That you’ve ever seen
She’s music and melodies
And the mockingbird’s songs,
By valor and arms
And faith ever strong;
She’s magnolias blooming
Around Jackson’s capitol dome
And the sweet scent of honeysuckle
That forever says “home”
She’s My Mississippi
She’s “The Hospitality State”
“Go Mississippi”
You’re a true State of Grace

  1. That’s pretty cool for your friend. How exciting. 🙂

    Oh, I wanted to suggest you add Entertaining Angels to the library over at Speculative Faith. http://www.speculativefaith.com/
    In the box on the right, click on Add to the Library and they will add it to their library where they are attempting to include “every Christian speculative novel ever written”. The website is going through a major overhaul on March 1st and the library should be much more functional.
