Welcome to the first month of We Are the World Blogfest! I mentioned this in a post earlier in the month, and today, we get to share the positive things that have happened in our world. I’m so thrilled to be part of this amazing blogfest!
And thank you to our co-hosts, Belinda Witzenhausen, Lynn Hallbrooks, Simon Falk, Sylvia McGrath, and Damyanti Biswas.
For my first post, I came across this touching article around Valentine’s Day. An anonymous student in an Ohio school made hundreds of origami hearts to remind her classmates that they were loved! As some of you may know, it’s my goal to help others see their worth and value. I want people to know that they are loved, so this article really stood out to me. It touched my heart, and I hope it does yours too. This is a beautiful reminder that we should include everyone and show them how loved they truly are.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
“The student from Troy High School who wishes to remain anonymous began working on these individually handwritten hearts back in September. The person, identified only as ‘she’ by high school Principal Katy Weaver, has been storing them at home in her closet, waiting to unveil the surprise until Valentine’s Day.
When all was said and done, nearly 1,500 hearts were handed out.
Every single student and faculty member received one. Weaver saw the person, along with a handful of helpers, painstakingly taping the colorful hearts to every single locker on Monday night so no student was left out. ‘She just wanted everyone to know they are loved,’ Weaver told the Troy Daily News. ‘In her mind, this wasn’t about her — it was about the school community.'”

This is a great story. I can’t imagine one high school student folding 1500 origami hearts, but I suppose that’s why she started in September. I finished reading another post about a young man collecting shoes for those in need and it seems to me that these kids can teach us a lesson in loving others unconditionally. I hope that girl keeps love in her heart always and is never jaded by the unloving ways of others.

Oddly enough I know of this high school. Have friends who live in Troy, which is a charming small town. Not entirely surprised that kids there would do such a lovely caring thing for their fellow students. It’s just that kind of place. Great story.

Such a small gesture that built on itself, and created an impact on the entire school–kindness and happiness lie in small things, we don’t always need big, dramatic acts. Thanks for sharing this, Emerald!

Emerald, that is such a sweet story. Thanks for sharing. I once knew student who wrote a message in poetry for classmates at school during a major exam period. They too do so anonymously. 😉 Great to be sharing this Blogfest with you Simon’s Still Stanza #WATWB

Never underestimate the simple acts of kindness. They mean more than we’ll ever know. I firmly believe that a simple act of kindness can save somebody’s life.
You never know when, where and who…
Thank you for sharing this heart-warming story.
